Task: Historical Figure

 Paper:

After researching the life and writings of your historical figure, you are to write a summary of his life and influence on history.  The essay should consist of about 1,000 words, less than a third of which should be devoted to biography, the majority should focus on an explanation of his views regarding the problems associated with industrialization and urbanization in the late 19th century.  How did he view problems in society?  How was his perspective unique?  What solutions did he suggest to address the problems of industrialization as he saw them?

The paper must be submitted in hard copy and digitally, on FirstClass.  It must also include a bibliography of all sources (MLA Style).

 Discussion:

On the day of the discussion, you will become “the spirit” of the historical figure and present a one to three minute speech outlining your views of society in the late 19th century.  The speech will not last for more than three minutes.  The speech, unlike the paper, should be delivered in first person.

As “the spirit” of your historical figure, you will also be required to respond to questions posed by another member of the discussion and address specific issues of the time period.
